Sidney Katz

As senior principal of Welsh & Katz, Ltd., which he co-founded in 1983, A. Sidney Katz is engaged primarily in client counseling, licensing, and litigation concerning all areas of intellectual property law, including patents, trademarks, and copyrights. He has received significant recognition for his work in the protection of computer programs and video games under copyright laws.

During his career, Mr. Katz has served as an engineering technician with Filmotype Corp., a patent examiner in the U.S. Patent Office; a law clerk with the Washington, D.C., firm of Hurvitz & Rose; an associate attorney in Chicago with the late Leonard G. Nierman, Esq.; and as a partner in the Chicago firm of Fitch, Even, Tabin, Flannery & Welsh where he practiced for 15 years before co-founding Welsh & Katz.

Mr. Katz is a co-author of many publications, including the following:  Electronics and Computer Patent and Copyright Practice , 2 vol., 1988, 2d edition, 1990, PRI, Washington, D.C. ;Chip, Mask and Program Protection , 1985, PRG, Washington, D.C.; Effective Litigation Against Knockoffs , 1984, 3 vol., PRG, Washington, D.C.; and  Effective Remedies Against the Importation of Knock-Offs:  A Comparison of Remedies Available from the International Trade Commission, Customs and Federal Courts , 1984, Journal of the Patent Office Society.  (Also published in Japanese in the Journal of the Japanese Institute of International Business Law, Vol. 14, Nos. 10 and 11, 1986.)

An accomplished lecturer, he has spoken at many conferences and seminars, including Patent Resources Group seminars on the topics of his publications, as well as on "Protection of Products from Counterfeiting and Simulation" and patent licensing.  Mr. Katz has also lectured for the Practicing Law Institute on various intellectual property and litigation topics; the Law and Business Computer Software Seminar on "Protection of Game and Computer Software"; the U.S. Trademark Association Forum on "The General State of the Law in Unpatented Product Simulation Cases"; the Conference of the Computer Law Association, jointly sponsored by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and the U.S. Copyright Office on " Protection of Audiovisual Works for Games Fixed in Chips"; and the Second International Conference of the Japanese Amusement Machine Manufacturers Association in Tokyo, Japan, on the subject of "Protection of Video Games Under the Copyright Laws."   Mr. Katz has also served as a patent expert in numerous patent infringement law suits. 

Mr. Katz is listed in Marquis Who's Who in American Law, Marquis Who's Who in the Midwest and Marquis Who's Who in the World, and he received the 1982 Patent Resources Group Award of Distinction for Outstanding Contribution to the Field of Intellectual Property Law.  He is on the Advisory Board of The Licensing Journal, The IP Litigator, and Mealey's Litigation Reports on Intellectual Property.  Mr. Katz is also on the IP Advisory Board of the George Washington University Law School.
