Mr. Wieland is a seasoned intellectual property (IP) attorney with extensive experience in designing IP strategies for start-up and mature companies, patent drafting, acquisition and licensing. His areas of expertise include preparing and prosecuting utility and design patent applications, reissue applications, re-examinations, and preparing validity, infringement and patentability opinions involving MEMs, NEMs, microfluidics, carbon nanotube production and application in electron emitters and display devices, nanoscale electrical components and nanoscale signal processors and storage devices, fuel cells, semiconductor device structures, cellular telephony, optical systems, including cameras, auto focus systems, lens systems, optical fibers and fiber optic switches, optical disc structures, including CD, DVD and CD, DVD players, infrared systems, planar antennas and other electrical, electronic, electro-mechanical, applied physics and mechanical arts. Additionally, Mr. Wieland represents start-up companies particularly in the protection of software and business methods including obtaining patent protection on e-commerce applications, financial instruments and investment tools and methods, Internet protocol and instant messaging applications, as well as negotiations and drafting software licenses and other technology transfer agreements.
Mr. Wieland is a former examiner at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, with four years experience in electrical and radiant energy practice areas, examining more than 200 U.S. patents in the areas of optical measuring and testing systems, photocell circuits, x-ray optics and other radiant energy systems, semiconductor device circuits and structures and circuit boards. He has drafted and/or prosecuted more than 2200 patents and patent applications.
Mr. Wieland also is experienced in litigation discovery management, legal research, drafting motions, responses, replies, interrogatories, document requests and requests for admissions, reviewing documents for production and claims of attorney-client privilege and work product immunity. He also has pro bono courtroom experience.
Mr. Wieland is Team Leader of Burns Doane's Nanotechnology Team, past chair of the firm's Docket Committee and co-founder of the Atlantic Nano Forum.
