Elaine L. Chao, U.S. Secretary of Labor

Elaine L. Chao, the nation’s 24th Secretary of Labor, recently announced major reforms to the white collar overtime law under the Fair Labor Standards Act. The old overtime regulation was last updated when Elvis was a teenager, nearly 50 years ago.

According to Secretary Chao, the new overtime rule protects many workers who were not eligible under the old regulation. And it helps workers and employers understand their rights and obligations under the law

It also will reduce the number of lawsuits about overtime pay. Federal class action lawsuits about overtime pay have tripled in recent years, and now outnumber even federal discrimination class actions.

Pete Bennett

Pete Bennett is the president of Rescue American Jobs.

Rescue American Jobs began in late June 2003 as a meager informational Web site. The public response to the Web site was so tremendous that an organization was formed in August of 2003. Since then, we have developed membership and chapters across 46 states.

It is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization, which aims to preserving the economic stability of the American workforce where left meets right and right meets left. Its membership statistics are living proof: 31 percent Republican, 30 percent Democrat, 18 percent Independent with the remainder evenly split across third parties.

Its success across party lines is evidence of the absence of responsible leadership and the need for a strong representation of the American workforce, both blue- and white-collar.
